Loving my SC17!!
I just had my first "real" sail on my SC17 today. I've been out a few times in light winds but today we had a lovely force 4 blowing so I got to crank it up a bit. ENE wind had me beating all the way up Sarasota Bay and then a bit of a screaming reach back down again! I must say that my ol...

Doh! Yes, cloth not mat for sure. I'll edit my post since I incorrectly wrote mat.gahamby wrote:A couple of things to keep in mind:
"Use woven fiberglass cloth, not mat"
I copied this from Matt's post.

Re: What year is my SC17 ? And hull repair issue
And one last thing - if you are shopping for epoxy fillers, then think about getting some West 407 too. This is a fairing compound that makes epoxy sandable for cosmetic finishes. Once your repair is done you can paste over with resin mixed with 407 to sand to a nice finish. 410 is easier to sand bu...

Re: What year is my SC17 ? And hull repair issue
A couple of things to add in terms of Matt's excellent repair instructions: 1) Make sure you get rid of all the gelcoat around the hole - as Matt said you want to build up cloth in successive layers which are larger and larger, and you'll want to end up with some pretty good overlap around the hole ...

Re: the golfball effect
Generally speaking a rough surface helps break surface tension which causes drag, so a textured surface is faster. You can feel this very strongly if you are a slalom skier: a slightly rippled water surface is much better for acceleration than an absolute flat calm which feels like it's sucking at y...

Re: Slightly obscure SC17 Righting Question
The SCs are a different bread of cat. If you have Hobie sailing background, forget it all. Nothing Hobie works on a SC. That's why I bought it! :D Now that I've had a chance to sail it a bit it's funny to notice just how many ways the SC17 is different (including the fact that it actually tacks!) I...

Re: Righting a Catamaran
So, is method #3 the safe powerboat assist? Hulls upwind, roll the cat onto its back, bows pointing in the air, rudders down, mast pointing downwind. Get a line up on the forestay bridle and have a powerboat pull that line upwind carefully? That way you get the boat up with very little stress on the...

Re: Slightly obscure SC17 Righting Question
Yes, I can see that spinning as you come up will help. In a really strong blow I usually try to set up with the mast about 45 degrees off the wind, so that would help bring the boat up into irons.

Slightly obscure SC17 Righting Question
Hi all, My first post here, but I'm super-excited to almost own a '94 SC-17 - picking it up in a couple of weeks :-) Since I'm in limbo, I've been doing a lot of sailing in my head and I must admit that I've capsized a few times. Here's a question from someone who grew up sailing an H16: When we rig...
