Re: Another day on the RIVHA
Dan, I would have come down for the distance race but I started a charter trip on that day, took a lead sled out on the bay for seven days. I know that is 'blasphemy' on this board but it was a superb trip. The Jenneau 39i was not an outright pig, we had her doing 7.7 upwind in about 18 kts of breez...

Re: Scaled down for the masses?
Imagination is what makes new and exciting things happen, I cannot look at the image of that sail craft and not be awed by the imagination that it took to make it 'real.' The basic elements may be old stuff (wings sails, foils, carbon fiber, etc) but the imagination that brought the boat into 'being...

Re: Scaled down for the masses?
And what do you do with this Stratovarious Violin during the week while you are at work? WORK? if that's my boat, I probably don't have to work! :D .......... but so ya know I am in total agreement. We humans are funny critters, we build some pretty useless stuff however there will be something goo...

Re: New Zealand AC72, What I Saw Today
Bill, Stay on the board and keep posting, enjoy the give and take, remember that everyone on this board owns a Supercat or an ARC catamaran, we are all members of the 'choir.' We can argue endlessly about what is good for the 'sport' of sailing because there are no absolute answers. I think we will ...

Re: New Zealand AC72, What I Saw Today
The only fascination with this particular AC Cup IS the technology. The racing is boring. The materials technology is simply beyond comprehension and the design work to create such machines is breathtaking. 'Test pilots' are requisite to any advancement in technology and I applaud these guys for hav...

Re: Downhaul and board positions
Mac, I use a six to one downhaul and yes it is important to downhaul the bejezus out of the dacron main. The answer about the boards is a bit tougher question, on my boat I can completely balance out the helm, on any point of sail, by how much board I use. Example, if I use full boards on a beam rea...

That's the weekend of the full moon, already made plans for night sailing at Kerr Lake NC. I'll add the 2014 Buzelli to my 'gotta do this list.'

Re: Hobie 16
jus' guess'n here but I think if you add 74 sq feet of sail area to a SC15 (and we know the beams are moved forward of the 17 position) you're gonna end up with one pitchpole happy boat, no matter what the buoyancy of the bows happens to be.

Re: How would you build an 8 foot wide SC22??
Changing the boat width from 12ft to 8.5ft is roughly a 29% reduction in righting moment is a 29% reduction in max sail thrust. Therefore righting moment limited boat speed will be reduced by about 14%*. Downwind performance will not be hit * Speed varies with thrust**2 or Drag**2. Therefore if thr...

That is some nifty thinking, calculating speed from spray height..... pretty cool, Bill.
