Jib Sheets getting caught under the mast

Post by jbshu24 »

Anyone have a solution for the jibsheets getting pinned under the mast when tacking? the line seems to get caught under the mast as it rotates and it takes some pulling and rotating of the mast to get the line out. Something like a shield or flap in front of the mast might prevent this, but just seeing what others have done.

thanks,
Jon

Jon,
We used to ship a piece of bungee cord with the boat called a "Tango" line that helps with this problem.
Get yourself a piece of 3/16" bungee cord that is approx. 6' long and tie one end to the tramp lacing (under the front beam) about 1/2 way between the mast base and the hull. Now take the other end around the front of the mast, through the bottom grommet in the sail (on opposite side that you tied the other end), back around the front of the mast and then tie it off 1/2 way between the mast base and the hull on the opposite side that you tied first. From the front of the boat the bungee cord will look like a tent and it will make a "X" on the front of the mast.
Sorry I don't have a picture, but this should help to keep the jib line from getting tangled in the mast base.

not sure if i'm picturing this right.

When you say bottom grommet in the sail, is this the mainsail? The grommet just serves to hold the bungee up, making a triangle over the front beam?

Jon,

Yes, the bottom gromet in the main sail.
