Re: Don't step your mast like me

Crazy Story. I have a few of my own with my SC-17. I broke the pivot ball once and had it welded. I made a mast hoisting rig that works super. I have a winch attached to the top of my volvo wagon (via board and roof rack). I stabilize the mast with the trapeze wires tied off to the forward beams and...

I sail from mid April to late November on the lakes and ocean. I wet suit it during early and late season. Full suit, gloves, feet and head. I am usually hot if the sun is out. I take less risks when its cold though. I am getting pretty good at trailer sailing. I may make up a mast raising rig for n...

Sc 17 Transom Repair

The photo's may be going in reverse order, I forget if it switches before submit. Let me start out by saying that I am not a professional fiberglass repair technician. I do research and use good quality products and common sense. I have rebuilt many powerboat transoms in the past with excellent resu...

righting and leverage

Leverage is all about creating distance between the pivot point and the applied force and/or increasing the force. The equation for leverage or torque is Torque = Force x Distance. Therefore, tossing the righting line up and over the airborne hull and releasing the righting system will increase the ...

SC 17 Hull Repairs

How soon do you want to go boating? I picked up a Super Cat this summer with some hull problems. I decided to spot repair and blend for now since I do not have the equipment, place or know how to spray. I also have no interest in painting. Plus, I wanted to sail this rig. I used a foam brush and the...

Toe'd in Rudders ?

My 1983 SC 17 has toe'd in rudders. The cross beam connecting the two tiller's is not original. Should the rudders be parallel? Seems like they should be? What was the original material and O/D for the crossbeam? Thanks.

SC 17 Main

Matt, You mentioned that the shroud adjustment should allow the back of the mast to rotate between the shroud and the "end of beam". Does end of beam mean directly outboard/perpendicular to the hull? Also, I put in a phone call to order some parts yesterday, just checking if you got my mes...

One step at a time

Thanks, I am not familiar with fully battened sails, they are quite a piece of engineering. I replaced the halyard with a 3/16 line and it made a significant difference. I also lubricated the aluminum rollers at the base of the mast. I can see where the wire rope end was hitting against the top of t...

main sail coversion

I just purchased a 1983 SC 17. It's in fair shape but should be a fun project. I have a few questions: 1) I am thinking of converting the leach of the main to a lug style so I don't have to deal with the resistance issues with hoisting the main. Has anyone tried this? 2) Where can I get an owners ma...
