Re: SC 17 Asymmetric Weather / Lee Helm
I'm kind of glad someone else has this problem... During my testing I did switch the rudders from side to side and it made no difference. Starboard tack has acceptable weather helm, port has slight but unacceptable lee helm. I have a little bit of slop but it is in each rudder. I know that this boat...

Re: SuperCat 17 Hulls Leaking
Hi there - and welcome! There are lots of folks here who know more than me so if anyone disagrees with my advice - they are probably right... For temporary fixes : I would bed the plug housings with caulk to see if that stops the leak before using 5200. They do look suspect to me. The gunk around th...

Spring Cleaning ...
Hi folks - Last fall I took the tramp off my SC17 - Double Jeopardy - and Tom Haberman did his usual excellent work repairing a torn corner webbing. This month, since I had the tramp off I decided to do a 800 grit wet sand and a drill powered Flitz buff ball polish. It's really nice to be able to ge...

Re: Possible new SuperCat owner
That is correct - I got reefing points put in because I planned a couple longer trips alone and wanted to be able to sail solo in heavier winds without being overpowered. This boat sails very well with the jib rolled up, which is also a very effective way of de-powering. The boat is hard to tack wit...

Re: Possible new SuperCat owner
Here are the only photos I can find of my boat with the sail reefed. My halyard wire had two slugs on it - one for normal use and one for reefing. As you can see there was a second attachment plate for the mainsheet. I don't have a close-up of the downhaul but you can kind of see the extra grommets ...

Re: Future Supercat 17 owner, Poplar Grove IL
Hi there - fun story I used to have a 4 cylinder car that got 30 mpg going 60 mph with no boat and 20 mpg going 60 mph with my sailboat. Quite a difference! Your airplane will go faster than the sailboat but the sailboat will FEEL faster than the airplane, I bet! If you have questions about how to f...

Re: Is It Too Windy?
I agree - I often furl the jib with some of my "older" friends just to make things more manageable and less dramatic. My neighbor Steve wanted drama and we got a little more than we bargained for. Double Jeopardy is now safely in the garage for the winter

Is It Too Windy?
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5Epjtti2FTs Hi folks My neighbor's son, Steve, who has never been on my boat, came over a couple days ago and asked if it was too windy to sail. I said, sort of. I said we might tip over and in winds like this, 20 to 25, someone might get flung and something might get...

Re: New gripe sheet for an old 19
I've trailered my 17 a lot for many years and never had the rudders drop in transit. So, now you have given me something to worry about... Except I have the boat in a nice location and some years don't trailer anywhere... If I was going to drive several hours I'd probably remove the rudders and tie ...

Re: Last sail of the season
That sounds about right.
With a 120 pound crew, I hit 21 mph a few times on a windy day on a broad reach. I'm not sure how accurate the readings are - Bill Roberts cautioned us many times to be very careful with gps data.

We are in northwestern Minnesota, nearest town is Battle Lake, MN. If you go to Google Maps to see our lake, it is Blanche Lake. You'll see a photo of my friend Chris and I double trapped in (almost) perfect form and just blasting along. https://www.google.com/maps/search/blanche+lake/@46.3479219,-9...
