Re: Weather / Lee Helm SC 17 - Help needed

Is the movement worse than this? https://youtu.be/5-KDpz7PJnM This was from a 17 I had years ago that had terrible weather helm, the holes in the rudders were elongated. I filled them with thickened epoxy (structural filler) and redrilled the holes. Tom and Matt usually say that when you have weathe...

Re: Solo righting a SC 17

Found this in an old thread, posted by Bill. Think I’ve heard it called power righting. I guess it would work on the smaller cats? Maybe we can get some clarification.... The second system I have used on the RC30 out in the ocean is to make the mainsail generate enough lift to right the boat. Step o...

Re: Solo righting a SC 17

I had a similar experience a couple weeks ago, picked up a 17 last fall and sailed for the first time solo. I flipped leaving the cove of the sail club due to a dumb mistake, wind was 11 with gusts in the high teens. I too was solo and tried to right it without releasing the shrouds since there was ...

Re: Tramp track for forward beam ona 17

I used some trampoline track from a hobie 18. Riveted it to my forward beam, worked great.

You could also use eye straps. The factory builds tramps that have a rod that you use to lace the tramp to the eye straps. I did this on a 20, worked great

Re: Hooking up shroud extenders on SC20

Here is a picture from an old boat I had. The jumper wire is in the wrong spot, I drew an arrow where it should go.

Re: Where to purchase squaretop main sail & jib online (new)

I'll dig up some pictures. I bought square top sails in Technora material. Seems they were over $3000

Re: Where to purchase squaretop main sail & jib online (new)

If you can swing it I would go for sails from the factory. That being said I had a set made for my 20 by Smyth sails and was happy with them. I had a main made for a 17 by a popular aftermarket loft and was not happy with it. You will pay more for Sails from the factory but won’t have to worry if th...

Re: RE: Spray rails on Supercat 17

Seems like more trouble than it's worth to me.

Self tacking jib is a great upgrade to a 17 and definitely easier than modifying the hull shape. Spinnakers are fun too!

Re: Small dent in mast of new to me 17

Both of mine were boats I bought sight unseen and had shipped in. I wasn't happy about it but didn't seem to be a big deal in the long run.

Re: Small dent in mast of new to me 17

I had a 17 with a very similar issue, I sailed it and didn't worry about it. The other 17 I had also had a slight bend, didn't seem to hurt it either. Those are stout sticks!

Re: sC17 pre-buy questions

Sounds like a lot of expense (flying down) for what most likely is couple thousand dollar boat. Save that money for some new stuff for it. Talk with the seller and get lots of pictures. I've bought a couple 17's and a 19 sight unseen and had them shipped to me. one of them had a small issue that was...

Re: Serious Damage Last Year

Do you have solid beams or telescoping? Sounds like solid.

The telescoping have a 'floating' post that goes through the crossbar and connects to a wire. There is also a sleeve that the post goes through. I'm not sure how the solid beamed boats came from the factory.

Re: SC17 Charlotte NC $1500

That 17 has been for sale for a long time(it's near me I look at the ad often). Price started a year or so ago at like $3500 or more! A friend called about it and said the seller seemed set at that price. That 20 does look nice. Of course someone could get my tricked out 20 in the classifieds for no...

Re: Spinnaker Theory

Kevin, I put the TDF on my 20 and am happy with it. I loaned the boat to a friend to race at regatta recently and it excelled rounding A mark. I followed them around and they gained a boat length or 2 with the momentum they were able to carry with the fast deployment. It didn't look to be quite as b...
