Re: Square top and self tacking jib?

Professional, You can get the best and fastest sails from the factory or through the factory. Tom doesn't make the sails but he has worked with and purchased sails from various sailmakers. Tom selects the best and fastest sailmaker and that is who he gets sails from. There are cheaper sailmakers out...

Re: Elliptical top and the AC72

Hey Guys,
What's up? I write all this stuff up and explain everything and then I don't hear a peep out of anyone?
Do you all agree, disagree or what? Have any questions? I didn't mean to turn everybody off.

Re: Square top and self tacking jib?

I have a 19XL with the straight track self tacking jib and an F16 with a curved track self tacker. I'm about to buy a SC20 and am considering adding a self tacking jib to it at some point. Which is the preferred straight or curved? There is a big difference between the straight track and curved trac...

Re: Elliptical top and the AC72

The only boat that has gotten any separation from the Tornado PN is the ARC22. The 22's PN has only gone down since it was first issued. It took three years for Darline, US Sailing , would issue a PN on the RC27 because she said there was not enough data, race results, to base a PN on. Today evident...

Re: Elliptical top and the AC72

There is no benefit to the reverse bow, reverse stem slope. There are significant losses. The reverse bow is part of the idea to slope the foredeck downward as it approaches the bow to reduce the sideways projected area of the forward hull length. This is supposed to reduce the sideways aerodynamic ...

Re: Square top and self tacking jib?

The benefit of new square top sails depends on where you are coming from. If your present sails are the ones that came with the boat, built in 1985 or so, then new sails will show up as improved performance, maybe even as much as a point or two. Adding a spinnaker, correct design, wil get you 2% poi...

Re: Beach Cat Spinnakers

The list of features difference between a Tornado and an M20 is correct. My pointing out that the PN difference between the two boats is only 1% point is a joke and it also shows the disfunction of US Sailing. We all know these things improve boat performance by much more than 1% point. A 150 pound ...

Re: Rudder Plan Form

Professional, The reason modern commercial aircraft have swept back wings is that they fly the majority of their mission time in the edge of the transonic drag rise, just a little below Mach 1.0. We are not there. Dorsal fins on fish are not wings and they do not generate lift. I do not know exactly...

Re: Beach Cat Spinnakers

Hello bogie, The M20s in Florida have never used jibs in any type of race. They have a split forestay and no jib tack point like an A Cat. It would take much rerigging to put a jib on an M20. Then, the hulls were not designed for the "pull the bows together loads" that come with a jib. The...

Re: SC17 solo mast stepping

Hey Guys, Your source of information is always the FACTORY! Raising and lowering the mast is the same on a SC15 as it is on a SC17 as it is on a SC19 as it is on a SC20 as it is on an ARC22 as it is on a RC27 and as it is on an RC30. The system will also work on Hobies, Nacras, Prindles, etc. The sy...

Re: Replacing SS Rudder pins

Hey Guys, If you lubricate the rudder kickup system as recommended in your owners manual, your rudders will kick up easily when they encounter an immovable object. The vertical slot on the sides of your rudder head casting should be lubricated with white lithium grease. This slot guides the pin that...

Hi Andy,
Thanks for the offer. What does a plane ticket cost up there and back from West Palm Beach and when are we talking about?

Re: Replacing SS Rudder pins

The damaging transoms problems comes from people not lubricating the vertical slot in the rudder head. This slot lets/guides the rudder follower pin slide easily to the top of the slot and release the rudder to swing up when the rudder tip strikes an object. White lithium grease is recommended for t...

Re: Beach Cat Spinnakers

Hello professional, I saw spin roller furling systems demonstrated this year at the Miami Boat Show. All of the bugs are not worked out of that syatem yet. What I saw was the tack corner and foot of the sail being rolled up around a piece of 1/8th " diameter wire. In a real life spin rollup wit...

Re: Replacing SS Rudder pins

It is a quiz. I grew up sailing Snipes. The bronze rudder pintles and gudgens were about 1/4 ins in diameter. By the end of one sailing season holes were worn out and the pins worn down so that the rudder movement was sloppy and it made a clunk sound when you moved the tiller. The larger pin size is...
