I guess you could make the shim in the shape of a T so it would have some over hang over the spreader tube end. That should prevent the shim from slipping further down the tube and also keep the diamond wire from touching the spreader tube.

The one thing I thought about was taking a bandsaw and cutting the spreader from the inside end up to the hole. A little slot sort of. Then slip the wire up to the hole and putting a thin shim back in the slot to fill in the cut portion and then cramming it into the spreader. Does that make sense? I...

Pab, I don't know about letting out the traveler 6 inches, if that is better or not. Personally I would pull it in as tight as possible when beating especially if you have a wire traveler, which adds a little slop. I could be wrong though.
