Re: Supercat 19 spinnaker

Developing, You are wasting alot of time and effort. Why don't you go to the factory for information and the correct spinnaker for your boat. Spinnaker technology is moving fast. A two year old spinnaker can be totally the wrong cut and non competitive. The top of your mainsail is made wrong. It sho...

Re: raising the main is a bitch on this SC15

Professional, More on the same subject. If you have an aftermarket sail with a large diameter soft bolt rope, this is probably your problem, drag between the non standard bolt rope and the wire to rope halyard at the splice. The SC standard bolt rope is 1/4ins dia, hard braid. Before you can fix the...

Re: Rudder Plan Form

Yes, it helps twist off in puffs. Twist also helps to adjust the relative wind angle of attack on the mainsail. As we go up in height above the water for about 50 ft the wind velocity is ever increasing, the wind velocity gradient. This means that as we go up in height above the water and we are sai...

Re: Rudder Plan Form

I don't know what Braithewaite's training background is. In Aeronautical Engineering, text book Aerodynamics 101, there is discussion about how to end an airfoil in free stream airflow. Many different end of airfoil shapes are shown and discussed. The parameter for judging the quality of the airfoil...

Rudder Plan Form

I'm having a hard time holding my tongue on some aspects of these AC boats. On the cover of the April/May Catamaran Sailor Magazine is an AC45. Standing out in the picture is a nice, white, shiney rudder. Look at the planform. It has a straight trailing edge. The leading edge starts out straight up ...

Re: raising the main is a bitch on this SC15

Professional, Along came the late 1990s and into 2000 and it became fashionable to have a very high mechanical advantage mainsail downhaul system to bend the mast. One could change the sail form full to flat with downhaul tension bending the mast. That takes alot of compression load coming down the ...

Re: raising the main is a bitch on this SC15

Hello Profsional, Who made your sail? What brand is it? If the luff curve on your mainsail has too much curve in it, it will be very hard to pull up. The mast forces the luff of the sail to take only a slight curve as it is raised equal to the bend in the mast. If your sail has too much Luff curve i...

Re: Beach Cat Spinnakers

Hey Guys, As the downwind head sails become flatter, they are also becoming narrower and smaller in AREA. In the limit the smallest downwind headsail is the Gennaker trimmed to the rear beam. The Gennaker will produce more force per square foot but the square feet are down in the Gennaker. A flat sp...

Re: Beach Cat Spinnakers

Professional, Gennakers are faster than flat spinnakers in a very narrow window. My experience is that a Gennaker will make my boat go 1 knot faster out of 20 knots when I am sailing downwind but high relative wind angle and I can hold the boat down. The spinnaker is faster sailing deeper and the wi...

Re: Beach Cat Spinnakers

YES, YES, YES, Devloping, you have it right. The keelboat monohull will not develop a sufficient increase in boat speed by reaching up or heating it up, as beachcat sailors put it, from a downwind run to offset the additional time required to sail a longer course. Therefore the keelboat sails straig...

Re: Around The Isle Of Texel Race 1980 by Bill Roberts

Thanks for your input on the Texel Race, Devloping. I have been at Texel twice and I heard the short course mentioned but I never knew what the shortcut was or where it was. It sounds like if you don't round the second mark of the course, the VC buoy, and stay close to the island shore and follow th...

Re: Around The Isle Of Texel Race 1980 by Bill Roberts

Hello Sailors, I ran across an abbreviated video of the 1985 Round Texel race where the person describing the race mentioned the ET record that I set sailing a standard SC20 in 1980 or 81. No other American product has ever come across the finish line first in this race and set an ET record for the ...
