Re: Supercat 17 footage from drone

Yeah ok,
No offense but I doubt many of us are looking at you or the sails.

Nice boat

Like the drone footage by the way, very cool!

Re: Dagger boards versus shared lift

So let's get back to shared lift. and for comparison we will use ARC21 which uses boards forward of the beam Hobie 16 with banana shaped hulls SC17 fairly straight elliptic hulls w/o boards If you look at a side view of each hull, you can see the forward point of shared lift on the 21 is the boards....

Re: Dagger boards versus shared lift

Bill, I'm glad you explained that equation, and now I can say that I understand parasitic and induced drag. For the record, I wasn't trying to introduce the thought of changing your design, I know it works. I simply got off on a tangent about lift when looking at the symmetric board. Two different t...

Re: Dagger boards versus shared lift

So what your saying is, less board is actually slower in some cases because the hulls create more drag, in a slide, than the boards do?

Now, getting back to asymmetric boards, given the "one up one down" necessity, could a board that creates better lift be shorter?

Re: Dagger boards versus shared lift

So what about the shape of the dagger boards?
If we are talking about lift and side force, why are they symmetrical, instead of foil shaped (top view not for foiling purposes)
I would think that a foil shape would be more productive

Re: Dagger boards versus shared lift

Hey Rich, I can't believe this isn't a hot topic. I know everyone has their own approach to it, but I think mine does a lot better with the boards slightly up (less drag) I know that sometimes, in light wind, I can do pretty good with them all the way up, even up wind. A little slide with very littl...

Re: Hobie 16

Shared lift
From what you have explained, shared lift will be more evident on a h16 with larger rudders. In raking the mast back to balance the center of effort between the two points of side force

Ok, I'll bite, what's the difference in the two rudders and why will it change things?

Re: Start of the May 2016 Mug Race

I saw this year's start as a potential catastrophe, so I hung back. There was a crowd gathering on one side, with plenty of room on the other side, so I went for open spaces. By going to the east side I would have to tack sooner, but i was able to get out in front of the crowd, then with a couple qu...

No, I'm camera shy.
It would be my luck that I would put that fancy camera on my boat and splash it.

Re: Mug Race

It was a challenging day of trying to pinch to gain distance or falling off to gain boat speed. Having learned from the best about relative wind, I opted to fall off to gain boat speed. I sailed about half again as far as most of my competition, but it paid off. when the boat picked up speed, bye by...

That makes sense, now.
Hence the word "relative"

Thanks Bill, once again you've taught me something
