Re: Spring Races

We made a video of the race this year with a GO PRO device. Tom Haberman will post a link to it in about a week. The RC30 was first to finish by 16 minutes over the second boat. The RC30 completed the 42 mile race in 1 hour and 48 minutes; this is only 4 minutes over the record. This is a 23 mph ave...

Re: Loving my SC17!!

You have it right , gahamby. A few years ago Marstrom took the dolphin striker system off
his A cat and claimed to be the first to produce a cat without this structure. Little
did he know that the SC17 and SC15 had preceded him by at least 20 years.

Re: Loving my SC17!!

SJBrit, and your SC17 says back to you, "it is nice to be appreciated".

Question of the day: What important structural part of all beach catamarans does the SC17 not have and does not need?

Re: 2016 SteepleChase Race

I like your limits, Dan. I might even cut the upper limit off at anything over 20 knots . In some areas the sea conditions are no fun to sail in at 20 knots especially if the current and wind direction are in opposite directions. Here are some relationships between wind speed in knots and potential ...

2016 SteepleChase Race

The SteepleChase Race around Key Largo is scheduled for this coming weekend. The Marine forecast is winds 25 to 35 knots, temp 60 degrees F Saturday morning and rain all weekend. A cold front is passing through. Would you like to sail in this race in the Atlantic ocean? What should a race committee ...

Re: Building on "The very best racer" thread...

Dan, you and Havliii are right; the best way to sell boats now is the personal approach, be a spark plug. As a matter of fact, that is the way most Hobies were sold in its beginning. There was no dealership system when the Hobie thing first took off. It was spark plug people who were fired up about ...

Re: Building on "The very best racer" thread...

I know what you mean, Dan. The simple sounding solution is to advertise. Tom Has tried that and no success. Before him, Boston Whaler spent several hundred thousand dollars and no success. Before that Steve Edmonds and I won the One OF A Kind Regatta by a big margin beating all the Hobie and Prindle...

Re: Building on "The very best racer" thread...

Hi Dan, Thanks for your suggestions. Tom Is willing to build and rig any boat he has a mold for and outfit that boat with any rigging and sails the customer might want. There are no hard lines in rigging and sails. Whatever the customer wants is what he may have and with a smile. What Tom needs are ...

Re: Tubular battens question

Dan, Starting with a set of specially tapered tubes from the vender, material is removed from either end or both ends to make a "matched" set of sail battens for an Aquarius product. The amount of length cut off from the blank and at which end or ends depends on the position of the batten ...

Re: Tubular battens question

Dan, You can buy the cheapest sails and cheapest battens you can find and they will push your boat around. If that is all the customer wants, then go for it. If you want the fastest sail and battens for your boat, then buy factory sails and battens. Technical: Let's say we want, for example, a batte...

Re: Tubular battens question

Dan, The SC and ARC battens are a very sophisticated bunch of sticks. First of all the battens have to be various lengths to fit the sail. Then they have to bend in concert with each other to form a correct airfoil at each batten length or position. As a beam becomes longer, it becomes more bendy. A...

Re: Tubular battens question

Dan, The reason for the splice in the longer battens, bottom of the sail battens, is that in one piece they are too long to ship by UPS. Splicing the long battens near the aft end is no performance compromise because near the aft end of the bottom battens is where you want the sail to be flat, no ho...

Square Top Sails - Part 3: Sail Development Story

Part 3: Square Top Sail Development Story My first experience in attempting to make a square top mainsail (mid 1970s) was with my SuperCat Catamaran partner Steve Edmonds. Steve stirred my interest in catamarans and this took me away from monohull racing/sailing. Steve and I thought we could design...

Re: Beam wedge Question

You got it gahamby, "the rounded edge". Before I ever got into beach cats, I saw an accident on a beach cat that used round tubes for main beams. The crew had slipped/fallen forward and hit their head on the sharp/crisp edge of the main beam tube. A gash on the forehead required several st...

Re: Beam wedge Question

When you are putting a boat back together using Moon Washers, clean all surfaces first especially the through hole of the Moon Washer. Then liberally lubricate the through hole passage and the bolt body itself. This makes it possible to take the beam out of the saddle at sometime in the future. If y...
