Hi Don, The locals told me the race was 88 nautical miles around the perimeter of the island. Sailing North up the East coats against the swells was very slow and jerky, no fun. The first hour was a drifter, around 3 knots of wind. We finished in 4 hours and 50 minutes, an hour in front of the secon...

Beach Catamaran Performance History

The following is a paste by Bill Roberts from the catsailor forum dealing with "the carbon Tornado discussion and faster boats". Hi Macca, The proof of speed is in the demonstration. I don't see anything as fast as the Tornado in this latest crop of "new designs". Look at Portsmo...

Foot Straps

Hi Bob.
There are two locations where you can install foot straps with no problems. One is on the rudderhead and the other is on the end, end cap of the rear beam.
Good Sailing,
Bill

Response to Bobby Marshall

Hi Bobby, The first thing for you to do is decide what is your goal with the boat. Do you just want to get it sailing or do you want to make it the best it can be with factory, class legal, upgrades. To straighten the mast, disconnect all diamond wires. Then apply pressure at the bend point graduall...

The Hull Design Ideas Behind The SC15 and 17

This text came form a discussion with Carl Roberts. Hi Carl, I want to help you out a little with this SC15. The 15 plug was made from the 17 plug. Two feet was cut off the back end of the 17 plug and then the keel rocker in the aft end was increased, rolled up to a new transom at 15ft. This also ad...

What is the correct PN for the ARC17? History and First Rac

Hi Eric, The reason the SC17 was revisited/reinvented/put back into production is because it sold well once and it took no big bucks, no new tooling to bring it out again. The SC17 was designed 25 years ago. All that was done last year was to put new sails on the same rigging and spar and add a spin...

Hooters

Hi Thom, You can try this sail in up to 5 mph winds, but you won't find a speed advantage. In 10 mgh winds, it will break the mast. Thom, look at the cross section of your 25C mast and compare it to your 22 mast. As far as moment of inertia goes it is like comparing an elephant to a horse in load ca...

SC/ARC Products and the Press

Hi Thom, You are seeing what I have seen for years. It is called "passive suppression". The reason Eric and I sailed the old SC20TR in the Steeplechase this year was that the max length boat allowed is 21ft and I wanted to test a 1978 technology boat against all the new hi tech boats. Now ...

1994 SC 17 Questions

Hi Bob, I think the quickest and simplest way to solve your problems/answer your questions is for you to bring the boat by my house and we can spend some time going over it. I saw the boat once and the self tacking jib system was rigged all wrong and there were some parts missing. I'm in the phone b...

2004 Tradewinds Regatta Sailing The New ARC17

Bobbie and I drove down to the race on Friday afternoon and put the boat together. The facility. beach/boat yard area, at the Elks Club was adequate for about 40 boats and the people that go with them but the place was full. Some cars and trailers had to park across the highway, US1. A Beachmaster t...

ARC17 Calculated PN and Sailing Characteristics

Hello SC and ARC Sailors, Here are some questions and comments I thought some of you might find interesting in on the ARC17. I have a few questions with reference to the ARC-17. In looking for a cat that could serve a dual-purpose, I think the ARC-17 may fit the bill. I like what I see with regards ...

Trailers with Rollers

The dealer that sold you that trailer knows nothing about beachcats and foam sandwich hulls. What he sold you is hull damage waiting to happen. Where the hull comes tangent to the roller, the contact area is less than 1" x 1". This means if 1/4th of the boat weight is on one roller, the pr...

SC19 Repairs

Hi Liam, I'm not sure exactly what you are talking about relative to the CB trunk retainers but when you asked about the glue, it makes me think you are asking about the indoor/outdoor carpet strips at the top and bottom of the centerboard trunks. These carpet strips are put there to protect the cen...

Steeplechase Race From The SC20TR Prospective, December 2003

The race started Saturday morning at 9:00am at the mouth of Jew Fish Creek, Key Largo. The first 5 miles of the race was N NW with east winds 10 to 15 mph. We tried the chute before the start and could not lay the the Card Sound bridge by 15 to 20 degrees. We started the race on a main and jib reach...
