Re: Last sail of the season

That sounds about right.

With a 120 pound crew, I hit 21 mph a few times on a windy day on a broad reach. I'm not sure how accurate the readings are - Bill Roberts cautioned us many times to be very careful with gps data.

Here is me and a friend on a nice windy day

Re: Last sail of the season

We are in northwestern Minnesota, nearest town is Battle Lake, MN. If you go to Google Maps to see our lake, it is Blanche Lake. You'll see a photo of my friend Chris and I double trapped in (almost) perfect form and just blasting along. https://www.google.com/maps/search/blanche+lake/@46.3479219,-9...

Last sail of the season

Since I don't like putting the boat away in the snow - this is it for me..

But, on a day with decent wind, and my wife on the dock taking pictures - I can still get it up !!

Re: Roller furling jib line tie off where??

My cleat is on the tramp track on the starboard side. It's a jam cleat. The first one was worn so I replaced it to get a better grip on the line. One piece of advice, from experience: Never rely on this cleat except for brief periods when you are near the boat. Use the cleat, but then tie off the ex...

Nice day out on the lake

IMG_6690.PNG Nice day on Lake Blanche in Minnesota. My crew was a first time trapezer who came down when she saw it was windy and we had a blast. We double trapezed for a bit but I felt a little on the edge so we stopped, rolled up the jib, and she single trapezed for the rest of the time we were o...

Re: Possible new SuperCat owner

My original Supercat had reef points in the sail - I seem to recall I ordered it that way. The logo on the sail looks original. Let us know if you buy it! And then take a week and read everything on this forum...

Re: Supercat 17 Purchase Advice Needed

Looks nice from here but the photos don't tell enough. Sail could be old and bagged out but can't tell. Not sure why someone would put portholes way back on the hulls - someone else will probably comment on that. Replace the rudder bolts immediately with delrin or plastic pins with cotter keys on bo...

Re: Wings for Early Supercat Catamarans

That is an impressive design. I could even understand most of the patent! If the sail provided more forward thrust during tacking, it would seem to me that it would also point higher. You didn’t mention that so I’m also assuming that even if it did point higher, the loss in speed more than offset th...

Re: Strange Things Can Happen When Racing

Except for crossing the Atlantic twice (on a monohull) I am a lake sailor and have no experience sailing in rivers or currents. I’ll bow out.

Re: Strange Things Can Happen When Racing

Hello from Cuba - bored at the moment so thought I’d take a look here - I have only seen Hobie Cats here so far. As for the photo I think I see boards up, one or both rudders up, weight forward, and sails trimmed in. I’ll even hazard a guess that the jib looks over-trimmed but it’s hard to tell. If ...

Re: Raising the mast

I realize this is an older post - but what the heck... The gin pole is the best way and will help as you get older and weaker. But, if you don't want to spend any money, here is how I raise my 17 mast - alone. ( I have used the gin pole, but sometimes I get impatient and just do it the fast, but har...

Re: Solo righting a SC 17

Hi Bill Thanks for your response and suggestions. I did release the Hayfield lever and then did pull the shroud extender pin. The upper hull then came over center as it is supposed to. I just could not get the mast to come up. The mast is water tight. As to the length of the shroud extender - now we...

Re: New Question, What foredeck shape makes the least drag?

Yup. I tell people that the Hobie 14/16 designed bows have two problems - One problem is that the pointed banana-shaped bows put the least amount of buoyancy where you need it the most going downwind - up front. The second is that if you do dip the bow in the water, the flat-topped deck (widened by ...

Re: New Question, What foredeck shape makes the least drag?

Howdy

I am unclear which part of the bow you are referring to as underwater - the bottom, the waterline, or the top (foredeck)?

I'll also say that if I was on a fast broad reach, and the top of my SC 17 bow was 2 feet underwater, I would be screaming like a girl and maybe airborne.

Re: Strong Bows VS Weak Bows

Ahhh, those were the days... I started on a Hobie 14 in 1978 and moved up to a Hobie 16, which I sailed the heck out of. After it sent my crew to the emergency room with cracked ribs things were a little less fun. Then here in Minnesota, a bunch of folks started buying these "Supercats" fr...
