Newbies trapezing

We had some visiting relatives and a mother / daughter duo had never even been on a sailboat - of any kind. Here they are and I'm pretty sure their next trip on another sailboat will be a let-down!

Re: Weather / Lee Helm SC 17 - Help needed

Hi folks - here is an update on my rudders. I made a shim out of plastic and gorilla tape and after taping it to one side of one rudder I went sailing. No difference. Then I came back in, dried off the rudders and put it on the other side and my lee helm went from lee to neutral. Bingo. And thanks, ...

Re: Weather / Lee Helm SC 17 - Help needed

Hi Matt and thanks for the information. Should I be able to see any asymmetry? I have looked at both rudders very carefully several times and they really do seem perfect... If I get a good day for experimenting I will try to make a temporary patch and move it around and see if I notice anything. It ...

Re: Weather / Lee Helm SC 17 - Help needed

The tops move a lot less than your video but the bottoms move about the same.

I don't think I have a deformed rudder because I switched the rudders and the helm stayed with the boat side and not the rudder.

Re: Weather / Lee Helm SC 17 - Help needed

More data Both rudders have at least 1" for and aft movement at the bottom tip. The holes look pretty good but are a little elongated. Today I switched the rudders side to side - just the rudder blanks - not the brackets. No real difference. Friday the helm effects were more pronounced but we h...

Weather / Lee Helm SC 17 - Help needed

Hi folks We've had a good sailing week and I finally decided I had to fix this problem. I have a firm weather helm while on a starboard tack. It increases with wind speed. If we are trapezing and I release the tiller, the boat will round up quite quickly and dump our butts in the water. It's really ...

Windy day ...

I think this boat wants to go sailing... I have an old mainsheet that I use to tie the boat to the lift to prevent situations like this. I had the boat out yesterday and put it back in the lift and since the weather forecast was unremarkable, I didn't tie it back down. I would guess the wind at 40 t...

Re: Solo righting a SC 17

My mast is well sealed and does not take on water - but it was a good suggestion. I just did an amazing thing - I went into the other room and read the SuperCat manual !! The manual recommends rolling up the jib (I did not do that). The manual also recommends the mainsail be cleated with 4 to 6 ft o...

Solo righting a SC 17

Hi folks I have tipped over and righted my Hobie 14, then my Hobie 16 and now my SC 17 more times than I can count. I am quite good at it, actually. But, today was a new experience. In modest winds, just barely whitecaps , trapezing by myself, I got all crosswise and tipped over. I first tried to ri...

I did as you suggested, but it took supreme will power.

Nice catch of the dolphins!

Re: going rogue..........

Well, that cost me at least a half hour of my life! It was a great idea and nicely executed.

But

Once on YouTube, I watched videos on how to burn stumps for a while and then ended up watching videos on how to make rings from gold coins.

Next time, please post stills...

I think I am going to frame the first line of Bill's post above or maybe just tattoo it on the inside of my eyelids!

Re: Spring Races

Just watched it! It made going fast look so easy. At 6 minutes or so I noticed there were no other boats in sight. I have never started a race - or gone that fast - without multiple profanities. Congrats to all three of you.

Re: Supercat 17 footage from drone

The drone was a Phantom - not sure of which model. The challenge is that the drone is harder to fly in windy weather, which is what you want for sailing...

Catamaran Names

Boy, it sure has been quiet here over the last month or so!

I saw this cat on the beach here in Australia while on vacation. It's a cute play on words but I'm not sure this would fly in a lot of our households! I guess it would be a hoot if this boat was owned by a woman, but I somehow doubt it.
