Re: The square top mainsail
I'll start. Answer: because they LOOK faster, so they MUST be faster!! OK, seriously, I can't explain it as well as Bill can, but the way I see it: in big wind, the square top gets pushed to the leeward which opens the leech and bleeds off pressure at the top of the sail. It is like an aut...

Re: America's Cup
They pointed out yesterday that the Kiwis had a self-tacking jib which might be helping them tack. It has to be helping them upwind, but they take a hit downwind when Oracle's big, overlapping jib takes over.

Re: Scaled down for the masses?
My two cents--Look at what happened to Betamax vs VHS. Betamax was WAY better, but VHS was just marketed better. Now, for the serious stuff. The wing sails are pretty cool, but not for everyone. I personally hope beachcats DO NOT go to them because they are a pain in the neck, as described by Bill's...

Re: Thinking about getting a new sail
I haven't seen one of the clew traveler pieces in a long time and had forgotten that I had one. But when I found it, it got me thinking, that's all. It is soon-to-be-seen-on-eBay. I had a great chat with Tom about sails and battens today. The guy really gets it! He's getting back to me with some num...

Re: Thinking about getting a new sail
Thanks Bill, that was a lot of good info. When I got the boat, all I got was a set of hulls, beams and a mast. I had to find or make everything else, which is why I ended up with some non factory options like the fiberfoam battens. I just picked up a set of tubular battens, so I'll probably go with ...

Thinking about getting a new sail
Looking for some advice from Bill (again) We are talking about a Supercat 15 Sloop, here OK, I have an old stock Dacron Pinhead sail that I got from Aquarius years ago when I got my boat. The leech between the battens is starting to get a little loose and buzzes in big wind. That's pretty much my id...

Re: Installing foot straps?
Wow, I'm not sure about using the rudder head--I'm sure I would lose a toe or foot or something! But, I'll try it..
Where can I get strips of that plastic you mentioned? Is that maybe similar to what is used for cutting boards?

Installing foot straps?
I'm looking to install foot straps on my 15 for traction with the spinnaker. I'm thinking about installing two on each side--the front one will bolt to the back of the rear frame and then to the deck. The second one will be behind that towards the stern. Before anyone says anything, I know you don' ...

Re: Downhaul and board positions
easy, there big guy--comparing your Supercat 20 to 'modern day boats' is just kicking the hornets nest. You're going to upset somebody! On the downhaul, it is really important on any boat. I can adjust mine from the wire on my 15 and feel the boat pick up in speed. The way the sails are cut makes a ...

Re: SC15 with self tacking jib - setup pics!
Gahamby, You are right on the downhaul block in the center--it is the stock halyard pulley. I put it there to act as a spacer and it keeps the halyard back in the mast away from everything. The small Harken block at the bottom serves as the 'turn' block for the halyard. I store the mast with the dow...

Bill's question of the day: Why do H14s and H16s rake their
Bills comment from another post: "Relative to your first statement, question of the day: Why do H14s and H16s rake their masts so far back?" I have heard many explanations, but the way it 'feels' to me on a Hobie is that it moves everything back on the boat. By that, the pivot point of the...

Re: SC15 with self tacking jib - setup pics!
Bill, I am sure I can't explain the Hobie rake it as well as you can, but it has to do with the hull design and moving the angle of the sails. I would like to hear your take on it as well as a comparison to the Supercat hulls and sail patterns--I'm going to start another thread just for that questio...
