The race starts just south Rickenbacker Causeway in Miami and runs for 40 miles+ south to the mouth of Jew Fish Creek The course is generally south, 195 degrees, except for a 10 mile stretch where it bears SW at about 225 degrees for roughly 10 miles. and then the course comes back to 190 degrees fo...

Re: One more Squaretop vs pinhead question
Ok Dan here we go again and this is going to be it, the end. A Cats can't take any more sail area with today's aspect ratio because they are already very much righting moment limited and pitchpole limited even in medium winds, 10 to 12. If you want to make an A Cat faster, add righting moment, make ...

Re: Interesting repair
Dan, Don't think for a minute that the aft end of the hull is low load, low stress. How about a jibe in heavy air that breaks rudders off at the waterline or cracks rudderhead castings. It Happens! Also the putty/glue ring around the patch/plug you installed has a very different coefficient of expan...

Re: Interesting repair
Dan, What makes composite laminate strong is "continuous fibers" spanning long distances. On your repair on the inner skin there should be continuous fibers connecting the hull strans at the top of the hole to the hull strans at the bottom of the hole and strans connecting the front of the...

Re: One more Squaretop vs pinhead question
Dan, Dan, Dan, what a mess. You are talking about straight vs curved leech and tying it to square top. They are two different things. The square top affects the "SPAN EFFECTIVENESS" of the sail. The curved vs straight leech affects the SAIL AREA to a small degree. Remember that when sailin...

Re: Where to purchase squaretop main sail & jib online (new)
Go To The Factory for all equipment and parts especially sails!!! The stories by unhappy sail buyers go on and on from inexperienced sailmakers for SC sails. 1. The bolt rope is too large and won't go up the mast or the bolt rope is too small and comes out of the mast. 2. The luff curve on the sail ...

Re: going rogue..........
havliii Steve Edmonds and I made a hoistable wing with sailcloth and ribs back in 1974. The wing plan form was same as H14. We sailed the H14 with wing vs a standard H14 many times. The wing was slightly faster in a straight line. Where the wing was outstanding was tacking. The wing would generate l...

Re: RE: Spray rails on Supercat 17
Alex, Your first problem is the bulkheads showing through the hull skin. I think the hull vent holes in your boat are clogged. On all beach cat hulls there must be a vent hole to equalize the the pressure inside to outside the hull. Otherwise on a cold day your hull will show the bulkheads like ribs...

havliii, I appreciate what you have done but let me give you some 1976 SC technology along the same lines as your tri. Take an old SC20 and recondition it with front tramp and new main tramp. The 20 will have much more topside area that your tri. Get Tom to make you some dry storage bags with compar...

The Next Americas Cup Boats
Well, the word is out. The next AC race will be in mono hulls with swing Keels and soft sails. This is going to be quite a step down in boat speed but it will be a sailing contest that will have "trickle down" technology that will help us all. Boat designers seem to try many many different...

Re: Controlling twist on Square Top sail
Good to hear from you Peterson,
As I remember on the SC20, the best traveler car position for sailing downwind was one to two feet to leeward of center. Trim more off center in stronger winds and closer to center in light winds. Watch those telltales, they are telling you what to do. Keep'em happy.

Kevin, Thanks for your comments and interest. I'm not doing much sailing this summer. I have a bum right shoulder. I'm doing much physical therapy every day hoping to avoid a shoulder replacement. To me the most important thing you said in your last post was about your college sailing. In the US in ...
