Yes, but it's a 10x easier to hoist it when it's unrolled already so actually doesn't make much difference. Longevity wise we have found the sails rolled from the top are typically in better condition for much longer then if rolled from the bottom up.

I usually tighten the main battens by pushing with my thumb until the batten (tubular) has a slight bend to it. Its tight enough to take the wrinkles out but not excessive.

The same thing for the gaff batten, however, if it isn't long enough that will make it more difficult

I suspect it is probably just cosmetic. If it is rectangular and vertical I am guessing it is actually a "silhouette" of the bulkhead caused by the foam shrinking as it cured.
