Roller Furling Jib question

Just got my standing rigging from Tom and got to sail yesterday, looks great! One question I have is what the short thin red line is for? The shroud adjuster came with three connectors, a pin, a shackle, and a twisted shackle. I have the bottom of my jib attached to the twisted shackle, and the fore...

Re: Solo righting a SC17

Hi Paul, a friend and I who both weigh around 170, practiced righting the SC17. We didn't try the shroud extender, but it did really take both of us leaning almost horizontal to the water to begin getting the mast up. It came up slowww, and that was in 10-15 knot winds with the mast pointing straigh...

SC17 shroud lengths and rigging question

Wire fraying so it's time for me to order some new rigging, and then some questions came up. In my current setup, I have the shroud extender and the shroud going into the bottom of three holes there so I can't rake the mast back any further. When I let go of the tiller when sailing, the boat pretty ...

Re: coming about

Instead of just letting the mainsheet out, you can backwind the main like on a Hobie14. Just grab the sheet and pull to the windward side. Also when you stop forward motion, pull the rudders to reverse and help come about.

Re: Solo righting a SC17

Usually a couple things to check:
are your sails uncleated? water on the sails will not help
is the righting line over the top hull and are you leaning back almost horizontal with the water?
is the mast 45 degrees into the wind? a little extra air under the sails can help.
any water in your mast?

Isn't a beam reach the death line?
Meaning if the boat starts to go over, turning either up or down wind will cause the boat to go over more. At that angle, the only thing to do is let out the sails quickly.

hull supports for trailering

Are there good hull cradles out there or should we make our own? I have an SC17 and the trailer has rollers on the bottoms and angled ones on the sides. The side ones pinch the hulls and can leave an indentation. Fortunately the boat has not been trailered much at all. I was thinking of using closed...

not sure if i'm picturing this right.

When you say bottom grommet in the sail, is this the mainsail? The grommet just serves to hold the bungee up, making a triangle over the front beam?

Jib Sheets getting caught under the mast

Anyone have a solution for the jibsheets getting pinned under the mast when tacking? the line seems to get caught under the mast as it rotates and it takes some pulling and rotating of the mast to get the line out. Something like a shield or flap in front of the mast might prevent this, but just see...

Having someone pulling on the forestay works really well. The longer the line, the better leverage the puller can get and the more they help by getting the weight off of you while on the tramp. I'm 5'7" and can raise the mast myself if someone else shackles the bridle to the forestay. My tip wo...

J I typically adjust my trapeeze ring so it is just above or just touching the deck of the boat. Thanks Matt, If the ring almost touches the deck, doesn't this mean that you can't swing onto the trap from the wire? i.e. you'll slam your rear into the hull when you swing in? I can see how this is ea...

SC-17 Trap lines

Was out there today with crew on the trap. Seems a bit more difficult to slide in and out than compared with a Hobie. One problem is unknowingly unhooking when scooting up onto the hull. Maybe it's because the hulls are up higher than the trampoline. I would say right now the dogbone touches the hul...

Thanks Matt, good tips. I noticed today in 10 knot wind that there was weather helm when on a starboard tack, but (what's the opposite of weather helm, lee?) the opposite when on a port tack. The only things i could think of were a shorter shroud on the starboard side, or a rudder raked differently ...

Mast Base Safety Pin, SC-17

What is the purpose of the mast base safety pin? Is it only used during stepping of the mast, or is it kept in at all times? Would it prevent a de-masting if turtled? Also, are you SC-17 sailors able to get weather helm by raking the mast back? Just would like the boat to turn upwind if no one is at...
