Re: Dagger boards versus shared lift
Bill once told me in a previous thread flying the hull is a matter of weight management nothing else. Trap to leeward and you will fly a hull in any wind. Pop the hull and watch the speedo jump immediately, it works.

Re: Dagger boards versus shared lift
I'm in. Downwind, I'm boards full up, at any angle, at any speed. I can't see any reason to want the drag or need the lift. Upwind, if I have active crew, windward board up, leeward board down until the helm goes to near perfect balance, as the board drops into the water you can and should feel the ...

Re: Start of the May 2016 Mug Race
OK, here's the simple solution. When the wind has a westerly component in it like NW or further West, Make PORT TACK have the right of way before the start and until the starting gun/horn sounds. After the start, starboard tack has the right of way as normal. The objective of the start in a distanc...

Re: Righting a Catamaran
1. Use the Hyfield to extend the shroud, a Supercat can be righted solo in most any conditions via this method. (Been there, done that) 2. Use a righting bucket for additional weight and leverage. (commonly done solo round here) 3. Sail it upright, one crew in the water holds the bow head to wind, s...

Re: Start of the May 2016 Mug Race
Since I don't race, I haven't a clue. But I would like to hear your thoughts on what was wrong. A line perpendicular to the wind direction might be a place to start the critique.

Re: Looking for help on a telescoping trailer
Telescoping trailers very rarely work well, just too many moving parts to get wracked up, jammed up, twisted, out of alignment. You can tilt the 12 foot boat and fit it into a legal box for the highway or better still narrow the boat to 11 feet and then tilt trailer it. You'll never miss the 1 foot ...

I would guess to keep from digging in when you approach a steeply sloping beach. I don't really know but would like to understand.

Re: Mug Race
Nice write-up Bruiser! Line honors (more often than not) goes to the guy that brings the fastest boat unless he screws up somewhere along the way. Corrected times may be a hollow victory but you can make the argument that they tell the "real" story. Stand tall, you won the class! If you're...

Re: Mug Race
May 7th is this years race. They are planning to have one start. All boats are then corrected on Portsmouth. We will have the RC 30 and RC27 racing in this event. Looking at the some of the finish times I'm guessing light air? Nearly 50% of the field timed out or withdrew. (whatever they call it) L...

Re: Foiling Sailboats, Foiling Beach Cats
Thanks for adding some clarity to the reverse bow 'trendiness.' I have only been up close to one Stiletto, but it looked massively underpowered compared to my Supercat 20. My boat has 33 feet of stick and the Stiletto looked like it might have had 38? It looked like a smallish sail plan for a boat t...

Re: Foiling Sailboats, Foiling Beach Cats
I'll probably get blasted for posting this but...... Your observations and opinion are perfectly legit. Foiling is here to stay. There are many ways to sail, at the bleeding edge of technology, or on a square rigger, it's a very personal choice. When the day comes (and it will) that a used foiler c...

Re: Foiling Sailboats, Foiling Beach Cats
Bill, Great to see you posting again! What projects are you cooking up these days? Foiling is not my cup of tea no matter how refined or simple it gets, just to much 'hassle' for a trailer sailor like me. What am I gonna do when I run aground with all 4 foils down at speed? (Running aground is prett...
