Re: Hobie 16
Here we go again. Did all of you experts know that some SC20s were sold with reefing capability from the factory. All details worked out years ago. Where have you been? Oh I know, let's go see how Hobie or Prindle or NACRA did it and then we will know. Hmmmm, well if Hobie or Prindle or NACRA hasn't...

Re: New Sails - Help, Tom!!??
Hi Dan, WE could sit down at a table with a pad of paper and draw pictures and talk for an hour or two about how the loads travel through a sail and what happens as the cloth stretches and the mast bends and the sail shape changes etc. Tom and I always strive to advise sailors to buy the best perfor...

Re: Dagger boards versus shared lift
Drew you are correct. A non symmetrical board shape, like an airplane wing , will produce more lift per square foot of area than a symmetrical shape and it will make less drag. So, why don't all beach cats have non symmetrical board shapes? With non symmetrical boards you would sail on one board at ...

Re: Dagger boards versus shared lift
OK, The "highly loaded" relationship that I am talking about is a ratio. It is the ratio of the sideways force on the daggerboard divided by the ability of the daggerboard to generate an equal and opposite side force. The daggerboard's ability generate side force varies with the square of ...

Re: Dagger boards versus shared lift
Well I'm glad Bruiser read the discussion. Did anybody else read it?
Did readers understand it? Am I wasting my time?

Re: Hobie 16
You are right Dan,
A SC 17 with a 15 rig on it would be a rocket on a windy day.
All beach cats would be faster on a windy day with smaller rigs/sails.

Re: Dagger boards versus shared lift
Hi Rich, Today is the first time I have seen this thread. I see much confusion between shared lift and no shared lift and monohull sailing and catamaran sailing. Shared lift is built into the design/construction of the boat. You will notice that SC and ARC boats have the CB trunks further forward th...

Re: Hobie 16
Kevin, There are two kinds of reefing. There is reefing for survival and there is reefing for speed. Reefing for survival is reefing from the top down and rolling the excess up at the foot. Now you have less sail area and a much lower aspect ratio sail. Sail aspect ratio is in the denominator of the...

Re: Hobie 16
Kevin, The 22 is designed for light winds. It has the SC20 tall rig sail plan for light winds. When we race the 22, we have some sails that are 30% reduced in area, main and jib. There is nothing slower than being overpowered in strong winds. The sail area that you can't drive , has little to no ang...

Re: Hobie 16
Kevin, I live about 50 miles north of Boca. I live on the St Lucy River and that is whee I sail mostly. Right now the St Lucy is full of toxins from Lake Okeechobee. The public is advised to stay off the river. For the past month I see no sailboats or power boats using the river. This is a bad situa...

Re: Hobie 16
Drew, The highly raked aft mast/rig on a H16 is something that already exists today and has for years. The H16 is faster with the rig raked aft because it takes some of the lift force off of the hull and puts it on the rudder. H16 sailors learned this by trial and error a long time ago. The rudder m...

Re: Start of the May 2016 Mug Race
Good answers Bruiser. Why does it take a train wreck to get things fixed? There were several racers, cat sailors, that saw this coming before the first gun went off. The rule beater monohull sailors thought they play it conservative and sail down the line on starboard tack and tack to port just befo...
