Technical News on Self Tacking Jib Systems and More

Post by Bill Roberts »

The newest successful foiling boat is the GC32. The boats are one design and in production and the class is forming teams to race on a world wide pro racing circuit. The GC32 has a self tacking jib system and guess what????? The jib track is straight!!! I wonder how they ever figured that out? Is this advanced technology or what?????!!!!!

Check the GC32s out at: TheGreatCup.com

And on top of this, jib self tacking with straight jib track, would you believe the front tramp is just like what Tom puts on the 22s and 27/30s, a triangular shaped front tramp with the point at the jib pelican stricker. Also they are using the square toped mainsail. Boy, you just can't keep anything secret anymore.

In addition the GC32 has modified the foredeck of their boat. It is not flat like most other Cats back in the 60s and 70s and 80s and 90s. It has sort of a raised ridge down the deck centerline that would help the water run to the sides but the reduced forward hull volume would make the boat easy to pitchpole in a breeze when not foiling. The boats design point is foiling so pitchpole, "no worry". That is what the Oracle 1 boat people thought also.
