Chewed up transom on SC17

Post by whalerman »

Both transoms have some issues, but the right one keeps getting worse, the more I look at it! I think I need to replace the whole thing, but I don't want o t lose the locations for the backing plates. It also appears that the transom is an integral part of the hull half. So you cannot just replace the transom.

Here is my plan of attack: I will cut a hole in the top of the hull, then reinforce the inside of the transom to reattach it to the hull with mat. Then I will preplace the bottom bracket for the gudgeon. I will put a layer of mat over the entire inside of the transom and finally attach this mat to hull with strips glass. The outisde of the hull will be repaired with a piece of biaxial mat, in a manner similar to Randy Allen's repair, followed up with fine cloth, and then the entire mess will be gelcoated.

Whalerman,

Sounds like you have a plan, but I would avoid using "mat" and stick with woven or biaxial cloth.
