Last Tuesday night, I rang up the posse, the planets were aligning for a stellar trip across the Chesapeake Bay on the coming Saturday. Winds out of the S-SW, 10-15 kts, sunny with zero percent chance of thunderstorms, 80 degree air temp and 63 water. This is a trip that requires perfect conditions, it is a 22 mile open water crossing that cannot even be contemplated with a marginal forecast.
Robert Coronado SC15 and Jeff Sterling SC19 both agreed to sail with Kathy and I (nutfarmerandy SC20). The forecast turned out to be spot on, so Saturday morning we launched from Lewisetta VA and sailed to Smith Island MD, we sailed down the Potomac River, transited the Bay W-E and and then back to Lewisetta, VA. Total trip distance was 55 miles.
R.C. soloed on the SC15 and Jeff had his 13 y.o. daughter Emily crewing, this will be a day of memories treasured for a lifetime. Here's a pic of the lunch spot on Smith Island, the harbor we are in is calm, but out beyond the channel marker it was white-capping on the Bay.

Lewisetta Marina, Lewisetta VA, their ramp fee is $5.00. The place is straight out of the early 70's but the owners are super nice people. We love their attitude and nobody there wears a yachting hat or shoes!gahamby wrote:Where did you launch from?

It was a great day and a lot of learning. It was a second crossing for some of us and first crossing for others. Commodore do you mind me posting the GPS tracks of our boats on here??
