Boom-less Main Question

Post by Kevin Keller »

Tom, Matt, or Bill,

I have the Kevlar mainsail Aquarius had made and it is very flat. I sometimes race in light winds and am wondering if I changed out the aluminum bottom "batten" for a piece of PVC or smaller diameter aluminum would that allow the sail to bend and give a better sail shape?

Kevin,
It won't work. Just as a test put the sail up with no boom and connect the mainsheet blocks and sheet in and look at the sail.It will change shape 15 times as you sheet in. When sheeted firm, it will have a very large amount of camber at least in the bottom of the sail. What all of these girations and changes are showing you is that you have little to no control over the camber in the sail. With every little puff and lull, the sail will make major changes in shape. In general the sail will become fuller as you sheet in and you want it to go flatter.
