Supercat 17 Purchase Advice Needed

Post by sailingNCandSC »

Can anyone provide their thoughts on this Supercat? Is this an opportunity to be pursued or avoided?

I know it needs hull work at the rudder assembly. Not sure if this is something that's easily addressed at the seller suggests or if it's something to be avoided.

Any advice would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks, Mike

Seems like a lot of work for 1400. If you could get it cheaper and don't mind doing some work it might be ok

I went and looked at this SC17 today. There was damage to the left rear hull area where the rudder assembly bolts on (illustrated in pictures) and then a small crack along the top of both hulls and cracks down the side of the right hull ahead of the trapeze. There were parts missing to the rudder assembly. I'm not an expert on these boats, but I feel this would be a better candidate for a parts boat. The seller is set on his price and seems committed to getting his money out of it. I told him I was going to pass at the price he's asking.

SailingNC, I think there's is going to be 17 come for sale on the beachcats.com website soon. A guy bought one a few months ago and it's not working out for him.

He's called Monkeyforlife on that forum. I don't know if he's posted an ad yet so maybe send him a pm

Actually it's...Monkey4life....he has not yet posted his boat for sale but he will soon. It will only be a little more than the one you're looking at.

On that same stream - anyone have any input or advice re: this boat? I’m seriously considering purchasing it. Too much? Keep in mind price is in CDN. https://abbotsford.craigslist.org/boa/d ... 13375.html

Looks nice from here but the photos don't tell enough. Sail could be old and bagged out but can't tell. Not sure why someone would put portholes way back on the hulls - someone else will probably comment on that. Replace the rudder bolts immediately with delrin or plastic pins with cotter keys on both ends. Check the bottom of the hulls for wear from dragging across rocky beaches. Check the hulls for cracks. The boat and trailer and beach wheels look well kept up.

Thanks! Hulls and sails look good, I think I’ll pull the trigger. My first boat!

Looks clean, a little on the pricey side. 3k is where you want to be after you've bought all that gear from Tom that the boat is going to need.
The inspection ports in the transoms indicate that the gudgeons needed re bolting at some point.
