Supercat 17 Mast Ball Popped Off

Post by bwana_don »

Good day,

While connecting the standing rigging on a new to me SuperCat 17 the mast ball popped off.

The post and ball does not have a pin that goes all the way through. There is a roll pin that goes through the ball on one side, it buts up against a recessed top of the post. Right below the recessed area of the post there is a notch for the pin to seat in.

Looks like it was attached with PL5200.

Can anyone tell me what the process is for putting it back on?
If it is PL5200?
Share thoughts on PL5200 quick set vs PL5200 standard.
Would like to get it up and running asap, standard takes 4 days to cure, quickset cures in 1 day, but has 100 psi less shear strength.

I have sent a note on the above to info@aquariussails as well.

Thanks,

Don

Hi Don,
I didn't recall the exact adhesive that has been used over the years, but I'm pretty sure it wasn't 5200. It was typically a two part epoxy that took about 24 hours to cure.

Make sure the inside of the ball and the post are clean and you can fully install the ball. Put a coating of the epoxy on the inside of the ball and on the post,. Push the ball on the post and let it cure. The spring pin should be installed just below the centerline on the ball and goes partially into the post as you observed.

Hi Don

The ball once came off while I was rigging. I put the mast base on the ball, and rested the mast on the rear crossbar, and the upward force on the base (considerable, I imagine), caused the ball to pop off. I don't recall how I "reglued" it but after that I rested the top of the mast on a step ladder or a friend before raising.
