Main Halyard Replacement

Post by Cleric »

Could not find anything here on the forum for this using the search feature. Maybe I am missing it. I am ready to replace my main halyard and am not sure what everyone has been using lately. I have some guys sailing new F18's around here and they seem to use teeney tiny line. Not sure what is recommended. Size and type would be welcomed.............I am sailing a SC19XL BTW.

Peter,

We use a fairly small diameter low stretch halyard line. The low stretch is key and the diameter is important because both the luff of the sail and the halyard share the same space, so if the halyard is too large in diameter it will rub and bind against the sail. The other thing to consider is that you have a good sheave at the top of the mast and a good block at the bottom for the halyard. The combination of all these things will help with raising your sail.

If your looking for halyard line give Tom a call at 651-462-7245 and he can get you the correct diameter line.
