Replacing SS Rudder pins

The damaging transoms problems comes from people not lubricating the vertical slot in the rudder head. This slot lets/guides the rudder follower pin slide easily to the top of the slot and release the rudder to swing up when the rudder tip strikes an object. White lithium grease is recommended for this purpose in the boat owners manual. Take care of your boats. Lubricate all mechanical joints that move.

Hey Guys,
If you lubricate the rudder kickup system as recommended in your owners manual, your rudders will kick up easily when they encounter an immovable object. The vertical slot on the sides of your rudder head casting should be lubricated with white lithium grease. This slot guides the pin that is attached to the rudder kickup springs on its outer ends. This pin follows the cam shape on the top end of the rudder. This pin drops into knotches that hold the rudder in the down position or in the up position. The vertical sides of the pin slot in the rudderhead casting should be kept clean and lubricated. You can use a flat blade screwdriver to wipe a little grease on the side walls of this vertical slot and your rudder will work perfectly. Lubricate this slot once a month during sailing season.
