SuperCat 19 Resurrection

Post by dustbucket »

Found a SuperCat 19 bleached by the sun and used for spare parts.

1800 miles later me and my two boys backed her into the driveway safe and finally ready for her refit. The trampoline is in decent shape (2 cigarette burns 😥). The trailer coupler was rusted so bad I couldn't get a positive connection to my ball hitch. Yes it came off on the interstate but was saved by the rusted chains 🥴.

The port rudder is missing but more importantly looks like significant damage to the pontoon. The repair seems to be well done but there is no longer a ID plate and the gudgeon was replaced with a stainless steel one. We've started disassembling and cataloging all the parts so we have a better idea of what's all missing. I've downloaded the PDF for the SuperCat owners manual, which has been a tremendous help due to the limited information on this boat.

Is that the one from SE Virginia? It was on the Norfolk CL and I linked the ad to the For Sale page here.

Do you know what formula of paint is on the hulls? That cracked mast step looks like the result of mast rotation or sway not being controlled during raising or lowering. Good luck with the re-fit. Where will you sail her?

Lake Martin Alabama to get my sea legs and calm the admirals nerves, then down to the Gulf and hitting the blue water. Long term, the Everglades Challenge then trading up.

And I'm not too sure about what's been done to the pontoons or anything for that matter. The guy selling it was very vague on everything. All he really told me was he used it for parts. He had it listed as a 20, but the little I knew about the boats I knew it was a 19 or 17. And hopefully I can get it sailing for less than 2k.

I learned to water ski on Lake Martin. Your cat has dagger boards, she's a 19. Those are hulls, not pontoons. Keep us posted on the restoration. Could you post a close up of the main sail feeder on the mast. I have the same style mast and feeding in the sail is a pain. Thanks GH

Started disassembling here is where we're at

20210725_095054.jpg
Found some wear on the port hull

Not sure what these raised spots are, bulkhead maybe

The starboard hull is in worst shape relatively speaking.

Starting to sand off the gel coat. Not sure about removing anything from the hulls just yet. The port hull that was repaired has "stuff" moving around inside so not sure yet if I will open the hull yet. But still optimistic about completing the project.

So the raised bumps where rusted wood screws.

Good luck! Nothing like a good project to keep you busy. I'm doing some major surgery on a H16 right now. Will be glad to have that behind me and get my SC17 going. The 16 is a lot of fun but seems to have no where near enough flotation in the hulls.

Finished cutting out the rot from the port hull. The stuff that was rolling around inside the hull was tree bark from a pine (I don't even know). I'm planning on making bulkheads out of foam insulation board where the hole is, glassing tabs to the inside of the hull, pouring expanding foam into the void, sanding the foam down, glassing the hole over the foam and finally primer and gel coat.

That's some major surgery!
"The stuff that was rolling around inside the hull was tree bark from a pine"
Maybe a pine tree fell on it. Or it hit a pine tree.
